KATHERINE PERRYMAN

Exhibition Title:

Somewhere, Else

Artist Statement:

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and as an artist I became interested in what exists beneath and between seemingly “normal” facades.  I am also fascinated with how the history of landscape painting presents opposing forces, from presence and absence to the idyllic and mysterious. For this body of work, I am led by the materiality of drawing as a way to reconcile contradictions in today’s landscape by repeated observations over time.

My drawings begin with what I encounter on walks, mostly when I’m looking around for birds and peering through curious gaps in my immediate surroundings. Like birding, drawing provides refuge for my mind and allows for deeper observation.  Working on paper has fulfilled a need for immediacy, reflection, and the pleasures of mark-making.  I start a work knowing the initial idea is negotiable because the process of making always leads me somewhere else.
